XML Sitemap

An XML Sitemap is a file (XML file) that contains a list of all (important) pages on a website that you want search engines to find and index. This file is formatted in XML (Extensible Markup Language), which allows search engines like Google, Bing and others to review and possibly understand the structure of your website more efficiently than simply crawling it.

While an XML Sitemap doesn’t directly impact your search rankings, it can help ensure that all of your content is discovered and indexed correctly. It can also help ensure that your content is indexed faster when you create new pages or products.

What is an XML Sitemap?

An XML Sitemap is a systematic and structured list of a website’s URLs. This list helps search engines find and crawl your content. An XML sitemap is especially important if your website has:

  • Many pages (as in the case of larger webshops or blogs)
  • Dynamic content (which is regularly updated)
  • Deep navigation structure (where important pages can be several clicks away from the home page)

Regardless of whether your website has the above, it is always a recommendation for each page to have an XML sitemap to optimize your crawl budget (you can read more about this here).

How does an XML Sitemap work?

The sitemap file is typically located in the root directory of your domain (e.g. https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml) and tells search engines important information such as:

  • Page URL: The specific web address for each page on your domain.
  • Page last updated date: Information about when a page was last updated, which helps search engines prioritize updated content.
  • Priority: A value between 0.1 and 1 that indicates the priority of the page relative to other pages on your domain. This helps search engines focus on the most important pages. (This is not a requirement.)
  • Update Frequency: An indication of how often a page is expected to be updated (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) – This is also not a requirement.

Although an XML Sitemap provides valuable information to search engines, it does not guarantee that all pages will be indexed. However, it does provide better conditions for important and updated pages to be found and indexed faster.

Types of XML Sitemaps

There are several different types of sitemaps, each of which can be useful in different situations:

  1. Standard XML Sitemap

The most common sitemap, which contains a list of URLs on your website. This sitemap focuses on listing the most important pages on your domain and can include up to 50,000 URLs. If your website has multiple pages, you will need to create multiple sitemaps.

  1. Image sitemap

This sitemap contains information about images on your website. If images form an important part of your content. For some websites, an image sitemap can be effective, as it creates better conditions for images to be displayed in image searches.

  1. Video Sitemap

If your website has a lot of video content, a video sitemap can help search engines index your videos.

Benefits of an XML Sitemap

An XML Sitemap offers many benefits, especially when it comes to SEO and content indexing. Some of the most important benefits include:

  1. Improved crawl efficiency

A sitemap helps search engines quickly identify and crawl your most important pages. This is especially important for new or recently updated pages that might otherwise be overlooked by search engines.

  1. Better indexing of complex websites

If your website has a complex structure, an XML Sitemap can help ensure that deep links are found. Pages that are many clicks away from the home page may have difficulty being crawled without a sitemap.

  1. Indexing dynamic content

For websites that constantly update content (like news sites or blogs), an XML Sitemap can ensure that search engines quickly discover new content. When a new page, product, category, or article is created, we want it to be indexed as quickly as possible.

  1. Prioritizing important pages

By assigning priority to specific pages in your sitemap, you can help search engines understand which pages are most important and which should be crawled more often (this is not a requirement for a sitemap, however).

How do you create an XML Sitemap?

There are several ways to create an XML Sitemap, depending on which CMS you use:

  1. WordPress plugins

If you use WordPress, there are several plugins that can automate the creation of XML Sitemaps. Plugins like Yoast SEO or Rank Math automatically generate an updated sitemap every time you add or change content. The advantage of these plugins is that they automatically remove pages with No-index, which we don’t want Google or the other search engines to index anyway.

  1. Manual creation

If you prefer to have full control over your sitemap, you can manually create an XML Sitemap using XML coding or online tools like XML-sitemaps.com. However, this is a more time-consuming process, especially for large websites. This solution is not recommended as you will have to constantly manually modify your sitemap as you add, remove, or change URLs on your website.

  1. CMS built-in features

Many modern CMS platforms like Shopify, Magento, or Drupal have built-in features that automatically generate an XML Sitemap and update it when changes are made to the website (just like Rankmath and Yoast SEO)

Submitting your XML Sitemap to Google

Once you have created your XML Sitemap, it is important to submit it to Google Search Console. This helps ensure that Google can crawl and index your pages quickly and efficiently. You can do this by:

  1. Log in to Google Search Console
  2. Choose your website
  3. Go to “Sitemaps” under the “Index” section
  4. Enter the URL for your sitemap and click “Submit”

Once your sitemap is submitted, Google will begin crawling it and use it to improve its understanding of your website’s structure and content.
